Pure product of Swedish craftsmanship The horses of Dala (Dalecarlia). Written records describing the Swedish Dala horse have been found in a sermon around the year 1624. For long periods the men who worked alone in the forests spent their evenings carving wooden toys for children. They used scrap wood to carve small horses which helped a lot with farm work and transportation. They painted them red because it was the only color available at that time. They used copper from the Falun mine (mining town). They painted harnesses and flowered saddles with designs called “Kurbits”, small leaves of lucky shrubs. Subsequently the tradition persisted and the little Dala horses were carved by the inhabitants of the villages who, during the long and harsh Swedish winters could no longer work outside on the farm. The little horse gained international notoriety at the New York exhibition in 1939 thanks to Mr. Grannas Olson and his 3-meter Dala horse at the entrance to the Swedish pavilion. The little horse is now part of Swedish craftsmanship in its own right.
